Baseball Programs for the Youngest Players Start Next Week

Tee Ball and Rookie Ball sign-ups are still available, but you need to call or come into the Parks and Rec offices to get your 4-7 year old boys or girls in the program.

While the Giants are whipping together another MLB pennant-contending team, and the Healdsburg Hounds players continue their winning streak, let’s not forget the most enthusiastic and youngest baseball players in town: boys and girls between 4 and 7 who are eligible for the Tee Ball and Rookie Ball season, starting next week.

But you can no longer register online for these spring recreational programs at the Parks and Recreation website: Practice for Rookie League teams starts March 27, while players in the Tee Ball League will practice begin March 28.

Instead, parents should call Parks and Rec at 431-3301 and may need to come into the offices at, 1557 Healdsburg Ave., between 9 and 6 any weekday.

Coordinator Alan Finnie says they are also looking for "a few coaches for tee ball," so if you want to be part of the baseball education of Healdsburg youth, here's your chance.

From the Parks and Rec flyer, attached: Tee Ball (4 & 5 year olds) introduces boys and girls to the basics of recreational baseball. Practices and games focus on having fun and learning skills that include throwing, catching, hitting from a tee and running the bases. Two innings per game; all players get up to bat each inning and no outs are called.

This program is designed to introduce young players to the benefits of sports such as fitness, fun, teamwork and friendship. Wednesdays (Practice) / Saturdays (Games). Fee: $60 Location:

Rookie Ball (6 & 7 year olds) is a progression from Tee Ball. Players move from hitting strictly off a tee to opportunities to swing at a pitch. In this non-competitive program coaches will slow pitch to players with the goal of increasing their hand eye coordination; if unsuccessful after three pitches batter will hit from a tee. Outs will be called for throws to first base before the hitter reaches and for balls caught out of the air only. Three outs per inning or until everyone bats, whichever comes first.

Boys & girls will build their baseball skills and learn the benefits of sports including fitness, fun, teamwork and friendship. Tuesday & Thursday (Practice) / Saturday (Games)  Fee: $60 Location: at Foss Creek School.
