Do We Strive To Do The Best We Can Do?

We must understand where it is we want to be in the future...the goal...the vision...the preferred outcome.

The idea of this particular blog is to have public discussions about Healdsburg development and growth.  It should be conspicuous that these discussions cannot solve problems today but instead will help to provide an understanding how to be more proactive about tomorrow...our future.

I prefer to think out-of-the-box, open-minded, with a dose of controversy, keeping focus on reality and potential while challenging ourselves to do the best we can do.

Now onto the title of this first blog post...Do we strive to do the best we can do?  IMHO (in my humble opinion) we do not on average achieve this goal.  The absolute first process in critical problem solving is to clearly and concisely define the problem.  This sounds easy but few of us practice this.

Once we have defined the problem/issue, we clearly and concisely must understand where it is we want to be in the future...the goal...the vision...the preferred outcome.

For example, and referring to this article; (), we might proclaim that there is too much vehicle traffic on Healdsburg Avenue, in the downtown business area, which is simply just passing through to other locations.

In doing so, this creates unnecessary traffic jams, allowing over-sized 18-wheeler type vehicles, all of which create noise and pollution, and certainly there is always danger in mixing vehicles and bicycles and pedestrians in close proximity to each other.

So if this scenario can be considered a problem, then the next question is how does this fit into our vision of Healdsburg?  As Healdsburg grows and doubles in size do we care if this situation worsens?  Well this depends on our vision of the downtown Plaza business area?  Do we ultimately desire a safer and quieter and less chaotic area in which pedestrians can shop and dine, etc.?  Or are we happy with the status quo?

Once we can answer these questions we can begin to look at options like diverting unnecessary and unwanted traffic around downtown Healdsburg using Vine/Grove Street.

Lastly, being proactive today to achieve a better tomorrow requires lots of time...like months and years!  Therefore if anyone believes we have a problem today, you can be sure it will become much worse before action is taken to remedy it.

This is a prime time to do the best we can do in planning the growth and development of Healdsburg.
