Sweeney Todd is largely considered one of Stephen Sondheim’s masterpieces. With it, he aimed to create a musical that could “scare the hell out of everyone,” and yet, somehow, be funny.
The story centers around Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber who returns to London, seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which, he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of 19th Century London lining up…and the carnage has only just begun!
*Content Advisory:&nbsp;Adult language and violent themes, as well as controversial pie recipes. Recommended for 12+.

NOVEMBER EXHIBIT: ENDLESS INSPIRATION
EXHIBIT DATES – October 26 – November 22, 2026
RECEPTION: SATURDAY, November 7, 2026, 3-6 pm: Join us to meet Ron Sumner and Karen Miller and learn about their art and inspiration.Be sure to take part in the Gallery’s free monthlong drawing for a beautiful work by a Gallery artist.Refreshments will be served.
Sonoma County artist, Ron Sumner, presents Endless Inspiration, a collection of new paintings and classic works that highlight his lifelong love of nature featuring landscapes, animals and wildlife, with a special focus on birds.The essence of this golden state shines forth in “California Hills,” a large oil painting of a sweep of oak covered hills.Turning to wildlife, Sumner’s masterful watercolor rendition in the “Young Fox” captures its wild nature on stark alert.And the compelling presence of a most majestic bird is beautifully memorialized in his “Blue Heron” watercolor. Other birds depicted in his works include parrots, penguins and owls.“In my painting, I always strive to translate my emotional response to the world of nature around us – to share this deep feeling with those who view my work,” commented Sumner on his inspiration. 
A lifelong Northern Californian, Sumner began his art training in school.After earning a BFA from the California College of Arts &amp; Crafts, he was a technical illustrator for a number of years before transitioning to a full-time fine arts painter.With an emphasis in watercolor, he has won numerous awards, including Best of Show at the Society of Western Artists.His portrait of John F. Kennedy is part of the permanent collection at the John F. Kennedy Library.He has exhibited widely and was part of the Veterans Art Show for CA vets in 2023.
Meet the artist: Sumner will co-host Art Nite on 11/5 from 5 pm to 7 pm.
The Stairway Smallworks Showcase features Karen Miller’s Historic Gems, featuring pastel paintings that honor our history – local artifacts that are disappearing.Highlighting this exhibit, “Ghost Bridge,” an early 20th century railroad bridge known as Healdsburg Railroad Bridge is soon to give way for the Smart Train.Its unique style is a key element to our local character but sadly could not be upgraded for modern rail.From old trucks to a beloved schoolhouse, these paintings harken fond memories.Part of our world for years, they enriched our lives and are not to be forgotten.Noted Miller on the impetus for her series, “I want to catch old things before they’re gone – memorializing those things close to our hearts.”

Join the Joe Mesics' Literary Canon book club! This month we are reading Labyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges, and discussion will be led by guest speaker Prof. Gene Bell-Villada.
Professor Gene Bell-Villada has thoughtfully chosen a subset of the pieces from Borges’ collection Labyrinths he’d like us to concentrate on, as well as a list of questions to help us explore the intricacies of this celebrated collection.&nbsp; Labyrinths contains 24 short stories (usually very short), 10 essays and 9 pieces Borges labels as “Parables.” &nbsp;Labyrinths was put together, translated and published soon after Borges won the International Publishers' Prize with Samuel Beckett.&nbsp; Borges had some international renown prior to this, but this was first whole book to appear in English.&nbsp; It was drawn from previous Spanish collections. Bell-Villada writes: Let me take the liberty to compile a list of Borges stories&nbsp; that the group might read in preparation for our meeting on October 27 (and in this particular order, if possible). Also, in preparation for our discussion, here follow some topics readers could watch for:
1) In a lecture Borges once delivered in Uruguay, he stated that there are four ways to create unreality in literature. They are: A) The work of art within another work of art, B) The contamination of reality by dreams, C) The journey through time, and D) The Double. (That of course is simply an outline and not a final, total truth.) Which of his stories fit these categories?
2) What is the “Secret” in “The Sect of the Phoenix”? And who are the Sectarians?
3) What do the short fictions “The Sect of the Phoenix” and “Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote” resemble? What do they seem to be?
4) What genre does “Death and the Compass” belong to? How do its contents differ from those of the standard formulae?
5) What do the titles of “Theme of the Traitor and the Hero” and “Story of the Warrior and the Captive” suggest? How do the plots of the stories diverge from their titles?
6)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In reading “Death and the Compass,” keep an eye out for A) the numbers 3 and 4, and B) for the names of the detective, the policeman, and the criminal, respectively.
7)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In “The Secret Miracle,” p. 93, following line 4, there should be three dots (“Julia von Widenow was the symbol…”) that are in the original but have been omitted in the translation. Q: What might that ellipsis suggest about the preceding paragraph?
