Coastal Trail Reopens at Sea Ranch

The trail had been destroyed by erosion and storms.

A quarter-mile stretch of a coastal trail in Sonoma County’s Sea Ranch development has been restored after over a decade of closure, Sonoma County Regional Parks officials said Friday.

The restoration is the result of an agreement between Sonoma County and The Sea Ranch Association to move a portion of the public coastal path onto open space held in common by the area’s private community, officials said.

Known as Walk On Beach, the coastal trail is near the northern end of the five Sea Ranch beaches managed by Sonoma County Parks.

Incremental erosion and severe storms deteriorated the quarter-mile section of the path, forcing officials to close it off in 2003. Since then, Regional Parks officials collaborated with local homeowners on options for repairing or realigning the eroded trail segment, eventually agreeing to move the trail slightly inland onto the Sea Ranch commons.

The Sea Ranch Association completed the trail work in July, fully restoring public access, officials said.
