Driver Dies After Car Strikes Redwood Tree

A driver died and a young passenger was injured after a driver lost control of a Pontiac.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A driver died and a juvenile passenger was injured after a speeding car went out of control and struck a redwood tree south of Santa Rosa, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers responded at about 7:54 p.m. Sunday to a report of an overturned vehicle on Brooks Road, south of East Robles Avenue.

Emergency crews found an overturned Pontiac sedan at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and hit a redwood tree, CHP said.

The driver died at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the driver's identity.

Emergency crews took a juvenile passenger to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with injuries CHP described as moderate.

Investigators have not determined what caused the crash, and CHP is still investigating.
