Four Dead, One Injured After Boat Capsizes In Bodega Bay Saturday Morning

Four people died and one person survived after a boat capsized off the coast of Sonoma County in Bodega Bay this morning, a sheriff’s lieutenant said.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard received a 911 call reporting that a boat had capsized just south of the entrance of Bodega Harbor near Bodega Rock at about 10 a.m., Sonoma County Sheriff’s deputy Lt. Greg Miller said.

He said the boat may have been overtaken by a strong wave.

The Coast Guard crew responded to the accident and found all five occupants in the water.

The Coast Guard recovered four deceased persons from the water and located a man who survived on the rocks nearby.

Sonoma County Sheriff’s helicopter Henry 1 responded to the scene and performed a long-line rescue for the survivor and brought him to safety. The survivor suffered minor injuries and is expected to survive, Miller said.

Miller said today marks the opening weekend for crab season on Bodega Bay.

He said the boat that capsized may have been out on the water to go crabbing.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation and the identities of the four deceased persons have not yet been released.
