Veterans Day is celebrated in different ways in different towns, often depending on how proactive the families of service men and women are in honoring the holiday. One such proactive citizen in Healdsburg is Lorraine Plass, the subject of a recent profile in the Press Democrat

Plass is no stranger to the military. She served in the Army from 1974 to 1978, in the reserves for two years and the National Guard for another four years. “I wanted to serve,” she said, “and it also opened up educational and vocational opportunities for me.”

During the Vietnam era, women didn’t see actual combat, but Plass was trained to use firearms and drive vehicles and tanks. Today, women serve in every capacity on the front lines…

Now working in property management, bail bonds and notary services with her husband, Healdsburg City Councilman Gary Plass, she dedicates her spare time to serving the 600 veterans who live in Healdsburg as well as the 39,000 in Sonoma County and the 2.2 million in California.

Technically Healdsburg began honoring the holiday on , with a breakfast sponsored by Sunrise Rotary at This was the second annual breakfast, which began at 0700 (that’s 7 a.m. in civilian speak) and included a hot breakfast and live performance of patriotic songs as well as a POW/MIA table ceremony. Proceeds benefited the Wounded Warrior Fund and American Legion Post 111.
