Memory Improving Tips for Seniors

In Home Care Information: 4 Easy Memory Improving Tips for Seniors information written by Stan Lawson of Sequoia Senior Solutions

As we age, we start to notice an increased number of alterations in our capability to remember things such as an appointment with the doctor, going into a room and not remembering why, and forgetting the name of someone during a conversation etc. We even sometimes forget why we started that conversation or where we were going with it.

Memory lapses happen in all phases of our life. But we become more concerned as we age.  The actual fact is, memory loss in older individuals is not a normal aspect of aging; memory loss occurs because of natural disorders, damage to the brain, or neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. These are really what we are afraid of when we become concerned.

What is normal?

The majority of the transitory issues we undergo as we grow older reflect normal alterations in the structure and workings of the brain. These alterations can slow down some mental procedures which in turn make it a little bit harder to adapt, learn new things rapidly or manage disruptions that can cause an obstruction of memory and of learning new things.  As a result these alterations can be exasperating when we want to learn new skills or manage countless tasks at once.

It is extremely important to be mentally active. Physical exercising is very important to keep your body fit whereas activities which simulate your brain help in keeping it in shape. This increased brain activity also assists in the minimization of memory loss. There are a number of games which can be played to keep your brain active such as crossword puzzle, scrabble or reading books which you normally don’t read, many computer games or taking alternate routes while driving. You want to challenge your brain, but be careful that you don’t become upset if these activities are hard. If you don’t like one activity there are plenty more you can try.

Learning styles vary.

Most people think that everyone has the same capability of learning new techniques and things. That is not the case; everyone has a different technique of absorbing new information. Some people learn it quickly while others take time, this does not mean that there is something wrong with our brain. But as a result this frustrates us as we grow older. The best thing to do is to use the style that works best for you, even if it is not the manner in which other people do their work. This will improve your memory drastically.

The doctor is in.

Last but not the least taking excellent care of yourself and visiting the doctor regularly are very important. If you have high blood pressure, diabetics or depression follow your doctor’s orders and prescriptions. By taking excellent care of yourself, you can certainly improve your memory. Regular checkups are extremely important because some medicines have an impact on your memory as you age.

How are you going to approach talking to your doctor about everything that is important to you? Remember how no one really multi-tasks? Why not work on a list of issues you want to discuss with the doctor to make sure you don’t forget to talk to him about your thoughts about your memory? Be sure to ask him if any of your medications could be causing you problems.
