Two Earthquakes Rattle Sonoma County Overnight Wednesday

NORTH BAY, CA — Two earthquakes struck Sonoma County before dawn Wednesday, extending a burst of seismic activity in the area.

The four earthquakes struck within roughly 13 hours of one another in the area surrounding The Geysers.

A magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck at 3:28 a.m. today about 3.7 miles northwest of The Geysers, according to U.S. Geological Survey data.

The quake originated about 1.7 miles beneath the surface.

Less than two minutes later, another earthquake struck at 3:30 a.m. near the same location.

The second quake originated about 1.8 miles beneath the surface. Its epicenter was recorded close to the first quake's epicenter.

Today's earthquakes followed two tremblors Tuesday afternoon, also near The Geysers.

A magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck at about 2:34 p.m. Tuesday, approximately 4.3 miles northwest of The Geysers, according to USGS data.

That earthquake originated about 1.7 miles beneath the surface.

Seventeen seconds later, a magnitude 2.8 aftershock struck in the same area, also about 4.3 miles northwest of The Geysers.

The magnitude 2.8 earthquake originated about 1.6 miles beneath the surface.
