WALNUT CREEK, CA — The Diablo Valley Farmers’ Market will rev up Father's Day weekend with its annual Zucchini Car Race on Saturday, June 20, inviting families, children, and creative competitors to transform fresh zucchini into high-speed race cars.
The free event encourages participants of all ages to bring a locally-sourced zucchini and customize it using complimentary wheels and decorating supplies provided by the market. Organizers encourage racers to arrive by 10 a.m. to build and decorate their entries before registration closes at 10:45 a.m. Racing begins promptly at 11 a.m.
Competitors will send their creations speeding down a custom-built race ramp as spectators cheer from the sidelines. Cars will advance through a series of heats until champions emerge. Organizers will award $100 prizes for both the Fastest Car and the Most Creative Car.

Market organizers say the annual competition celebrates the summer harvest while giving families a hands-on way to connect with local agriculture. The event also offers a nostalgic throwback to backyard competitions, creative play, and community gatherings.
Visitors can make a day of it by exploring seasonal offerings from local farmers, including Brentwood sweet corn, organic berries, tree-ripened peaches, nectarines, sourdough breads, and handmade pastries. Food vendors will also serve gourmet crepes, handmade tamales, and other prepared foods.
