On July 3rd, 2021 at approximately 3:30 am, Officers responded to the 1600 block of Hermosa Avenue regarding a male subject that was passed out on the sidewalk. The male, later identified as Jeffrey Woods was breathing and bleeding from his nose and mouth. Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and transported Woods to a local hospital where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.
Hermosa Beach Police Department Detectives and Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Homicide Investigators worked closely together during an investigation and discovered an assault had occurred resulting in the victim’s death.
After further investigation, Homicide Investigators questioned a person of interest and served a search warrant on his residence. Homicide Investigators have identified 23-year-old Joshua Dirnu of San Diego, California as the suspect in the death of Woods. Dirnu’s alleged involvement in the assault appears to be an isolated incident. On October 13, 2021, investigators presented the case to the District Attorney’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office filed homicide charges against Dirnu at the Los Angeles County Superior Torrance Courthouse and issued an arrest warrant.
On October 19, 2021 Dirnu was located and arrested by Carlsbad Police Department in San Diego County for the warrant, and he is currently in custody awaiting trial.
