Former Transportation Planner for City of Santa Monica Has 17 Years of Public and Private Sector Experience

HERMOSA BEACH – Joseph SanClemente, a former transportation planner for the City of Santa Monica, will join the City of Hermosa Beach as the director of its Public Works Department on September 7. 

SanClemente has worked as a transportation planner in the City of Santa Monica since 2017, overseeing more than 20 transportation and safety enhancement projects with a $32 million budget as part of the Mobility Division’s Capital Improvement Program. Before moving to West Coast, he worked in the private sector as an Associate Principal and Senior Transportation Engineer for Howard Stein Hudson in Boston.  

“Joe is a terrific addition to our City’s team,” City Manager Suja Lowenthal said. “His knowledge and perspective will further strengthen our Public Works Department and benefit our community as a whole. I want to thank Assistant City Manager Angela Crespi, who has very capably served as Interim Public Works Director since the retirement of former Public Works Director Marnell Gibson earlier this year.” 

SanClemente will lead the City’s 26-person Public Works Department and report directly to the City Manager. He will be responsible for reviewing, maintaining and optimizing the City’s Capital Improvement Plan timeline and projects, including improvements to City infrastructure and internal systems. He will also provide staff support to the five-member Public Works Commission. 

“Hermosa Beach is very well-regarded throughout Southern California, and I look forward to joining an outstanding team that is dedicated to serving this community,” SanClemente said. “My family and I have always loved spending time in Hermosa Beach, and I am thrilled to become a part of the City’s team.” 

SanClemente received his B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston. He is also a Professional Civil Engineer and a Certified Planner. He lives in the South Bay with his family.
