About the El Segundo High School Band

A successful fundraiser of this caliber is critical to the future success of the El Segundo High School Band program. Due to budget cuts from Sacramento, there have been limited school district funds available to support the band over the last decade. The South Bay Music Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, along with the high school band parents, have embraced the challenge of creating new and innovative fundraising opportunities. With a current annual operating budget of $100,000+, the El Segundo High School band is funded 90% by the community.

Under the current leadership of director Steven Allen Fox and assistant director Edie Rice, The El Segundo High School Band has rapidly grown from 40 students to 100 band members strong. Students join band for a variety of reasons, but as a team, they all embrace the mantra of “Eagle Pride”, a motto that embodies a commitment to hard work and the pursuit of excellence. As the ESHS band program has grown, its reputation has risen. In the past 5 years, the ESHS Marching Band has received three consecutive 1st Place Awards at the Judge’s Invitational for Concert Bands, five consecutive Top 3 placements at the California State Championship for Marching Bands, and two acceptances to march in the Disneyland Main Street Parade.

This year, the El Segundo High School Marching Band competed in seven different competitions with their award-winning show, “The Cosmos,” finishing 5th in the state in their division. Band director, Steven Allen Fox, said of the season: “I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication the band students showed this season. From the beginning to the end of the season they never backed off of reaching for their best.”
