El Camino College Theatre Department Presents "Bye Bye Birdie"
"Put on a Happy Face" for This Musical Classic

El Camino College Theatre Department students will take the Campus Theatre by storm in a can’t-miss production of “Bye Bye Birdie.” The show opens with a performance at 8:00 p.m. Saturday April 18, and follows with performances scheduled at 3:00 p.m. Sunday April 19, 8:00 p.m. Friday April 24, and Saturday April 25, 3:00 p.m. April 26, 8:00 p.m. Friday May 1, and Saturday May 2, with a final performance at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday May 3.
The theatre department closes out their 2014-2015 season with this Tony Award-winning romantic musical comedy that first took center stage on April 14, 1960 and performed until 1961.
In “Bye Bye Birdie” a small town called Sweet Apple in Ohio gets all shaken up over news that heartthrob and rock ‘n’ roll sensation Conrad Birdie announces he will be traveling to their town to make a farewell television performance and give his biggest fan a kiss on the Ed Sullivan Show before he leaves for the Army.

The original tale in “Bye Bye Birdie” was introduced to the public through a book written by Michael Stewart. Classic songs like “Put on a Happy Face,” “The Telephone Hour,” “Kids,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” were created by Charles Strouse with lyrics by Lee Adams.
This all-American classic is sure to satisfy all audiences offering an eclectic combination of humor, dance, nostalgia, satire, and rock ‘n’ roll.

El Camino College theatre professor Ronald Scarleta will be artistic director for the production.
Part of the show is funded through the Musical Department Fund that was established in 2005 with generous donations from the Les Thompson Family and Hamilton M. Maddaford.
As a courtesy to the performers and our audiences, children under 5 years of age will not be admitted to theatre series performances. Children 5 and older, however, must have a ticket and be able to sit quietly throughout the performance.
Tickets to “Bye Bye Birdie” are $25 for adults and $18 for children 12 and under. Tickets may be purchased at www.centerforthearts.org, by phone at 310-329-5345 or toll-free at 800-832-ARTS. The Ticket Office is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Campus Parking is $3. The Campus Theatre is located at 16007 Crenshaw Boulevard, Torrance.
