Football Player's Killing Unsolved 1 Year After South Bay Shooting

TORRANCE, CA — Over a year after a 17-year-old Culver City High School graduate was killed in shooting, the case remains unsolved, prompting county officials on Tuesday to increase the size of a cash reward for information about the teen's killer.

Chyler Paton was killed outside a Torrance pool party in June 2025 shortly after graduating from high school. He was set to attend California State University, Dominguez Hills in the fall.

The former varsity football player had arrived to pick up his brother from the party and was standing next to the homeowner in the driveway when an SUV rounded the corner and someone apparently fired shots out of the vehicle. Someone at the party fired back, CBS Los Angeles reported at the time.

A "person of interest" was arrested, but "authorities case filing was not secured," according to a motion from county Supervisor Janice Hahn earlier this year.

The Board of Supervisors in February voted to extend a $20,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people who killed Paton. On Tuesday, the board increased that award to $50,000.

Hahn wrote in the motion that detectives "believe there may be witnesses who may be able to provide corroborating information."

"More than a year ago, a family lost their 17-year-old son to gun violence," Supervisor Holly Mitchell said. "Chyler Paton had just graduated from Culver City High School and had a bright future ahead of him when his life was tragically taken. We will continue to urge anyone with information that could hold those responsible for this senseless and heinous crime to come forward."
