Go Cajun to Bookend a Night Out

Our Patch writer discovers that New Orleans Cajun and Creole serves up a great meal when the night is young, and Los Muchachos offers good food when you're ready to wind down.

Similar to a good work out, when going out on the town you should always warm up and cool down.

Leaping directly from your Friday afternoon to your Friday night is enough to shock the system into going home early, and the existential crisis that is a Saturday night spent in doors.

Though I am about as far from being a doctor as one can conceivably be, I prescribe a good meal to bookend a night out.

And, Hermosa Beach provides two restaurants perfect for the rev-up and wind down.

I originally walked into on Pier Avenue to chat with owner and head chef Casandra Epuna because I had heard a rumor that her restaurant serves alligator.

As a human being, I am wholly interested in consuming something that, in any environment other than a Cajun kitchen, would consume me.

I walked into the beautifully appointed and reasonably priced restaurant.

“I heard that you serve alligator,” I said when I sat down, as if I were interrogating Epuna.

She corrected me, stating that her other restaurant, , serves alligator tacos.

But after surveying the New Orleans Cajun and Creole menu, I concluded that the eatery is the go-to destination for a good meal with a couple of drinks before heading out on the town. It closes at 10 p.m.

If you’re looking for something to take the edge off of your last round of shots later in the night, look no farther than Los Muchachos, and those alligator tacos. The restaurant closes at 2 a.m.

The menus at both of these establishments are as varied as their names, however there is a common theme of Cajun, Creole, and Mexican flavors.

I asked Epuna, if she sees a large nightlife crowd at Los Muchachos. She chuckled easily to herself.

“Yeah, people come in all the time on the way back from the club,” she replied. “Everybody wants some good food after they’ve been drinking.”

Truer words have never been spoken, Ms. Epuna.

Saying Goodbye

Sadly my friends, this is to be my last “After Dark” column. I have had a great deal of fun in my time working for the nightlife section of Hermosa Beach Patch, so I just wanted to thank you for reading.  This actually comes at a rather fortuitous time for me, as I will be leaving to serve as a Peace Corps volunteer in Albania about a month from now. published on Redondo Beach Patch.
