High Surf Pounds Coastline

West and southwest facing beaches 5 to 8 foot waves.

High surf generated by a long-period swell pounded the Southern California coast today.

As the swell builds, high surf was expected along southwest- and west- facing beaches, along with powerful rip currents, long-shore currents, sneaker waves and minor beach erosion, said the National Weather Service.

A high surf advisory will be in effect along the Los Angeles and San Diego coasts -- as well as in neighboring counties -- until 4 p.m. Tuesday.
