We’ve got a big weekend coming up – Easter, Passover and….Surf Fest! Here’s to a lovely holiday weekend filled with family, friends, food and all things surf!
Support local merchants and get a jump start on the weekend at the Downtown Torrance Artisan & Flea Market! Every Thursday, Old Town Torrance takes to the streets with gifts, arts and crafts, jewelry, art, clothing, antiques and more! The weekly event features live music, tastings and product demonstrations and runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Torrance expert Dave Brownlee of Antique Appraisals will place a value on your treasures for $3 per item. Downtown restaurants and shops will stay open late with sidewalk sales and Market Place specials. Free parking is available in the public parking lot on Cravens Avenue and the public parking structure with entrances on Sartori and Cabrillo Avenues. Free valet parking is also available at The Depot Restaurant located at 1250 Cabrillo Avenue. The Downtown Torrance Artisan & Flea Market is located at Sartori and El Prado in Torrance. Spyder Surf Fest kicks off Friday, April 3 with a production of Point Break Live! at the Hermosa Play House presented by Spyder Surf, the Hermosa Historical Museum and the Hermosa Arts Foundation. Point Break Live! is a parody by Jaime Keeling of the 1991 Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze extreme sports movie Point Break. Sometimes credited as the first-ever “reality-play”, each performance features a new, unrehearsed actor in the protagonist role of “Keanu”, reading their lines from cue-cards delivered by a production assistant. The LA Times calls it “Uproarious” and Variety claims it’s “Hilarious”. The show is rated PG-13. The Legends of Surf Weekend Pre-Party will take place prior to the show at 5 p.m. inside the Hermosa Beach Museum. The show starts at 7 p.m. sharp. The eighth annual Spyder Surf Fest will showcase the action sports industry’s most celebrated athletes, brands, fashion, music and more on Saturday, April 4 at Pier Plaza in Hermosa Beach. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. the family festival will present the LA Surf Awards, highlight the hottest beach fashions, showcase interactive booths, orchestrate meet ‘n greets with the industry’s finest athletes and influencers and offer giveways and prizes. On Saturday at 11 a.m. the City of Hermosa Beach will induct four new individuals into the “Surfers Walk of Fame”, including Spyder Surf founder Dennis Jarvis, along with Chris Barela, Mike Benavidez and Derek Levy. Dennis Jarvis will be recognized for his achievements and contributions to the surf industry at large as well as to the South Bay’s rich surf history for over three decades. At 12 p.m. the LA Surf Awards will return to Pier Plaza to recognize individuals and brands that have had a standout year. Categories will include the Standout Surfer, Breakout Brand, Vanguard Photographer, Breakout Surfer, Grom of the Year, California Surf Icon and more. The awards ceremony will be MC’d by Fox 11 LA’s meteorologist Rick Dickert and will feature the following guest presenters: South Bay pro surfer Alex Grey, Pennywise’s Jim Lindberg, Bob Hurley (Founder of Hurley) and more. Pier Plaza will also amplify the sounds of musical acts, Derek and Mark Levy’s band THE BIXBY DICKS and Kevin Sousa as the Action Sports Lifestyle Fashion Show takes the stage and then back to the musical styling’s of LIFE featuring MOI from Tomorrows Bad seeds, and local favorites, Soul on Tap and Lose Control. At 6 p.m. the Surf Fest will continue its long-time, official after-party tradition at Waterman’s Hermosa Beach to celebrate the surf industry along with the new Surfers Hall of Fame inductees. The City of Torrance Community Services Department is hosting a Pancake Breakfast and Visit with the Bunny at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center Toyota Meeting Hall on Saturday, April 4 from 9 a.m. to noon. The program will include a pancake breakfast, puppet show, cookie decorating, crafts and a photo with the Bunny. The public is invited to attend the Sculpture Unveiling of the Yin Yang Wave at Manhattan Village Shopping Center on Wednesday, April 8 at 6 p.m. at the center court fountain. Hometown professional surfer and world-renowned artist, Chris Barela, has created a one-of-a-kind wave sculpture evoking his passion for the ocean. Barela’s distinctive double-sided wave sculpture synchronizes the endless force of the ocean as the tides ebb and flow, which has been aptly named Yin Yang Wave.
