Today and tomorrow are the final days of the Urban Land Institute Advisory Panel for Downtown Manhattan Beach. The Advisory Panel is comprised of various land use experts to engage community stakeholders and evaluate the Downtown area. The purpose of this engagement process is to ensure the Downtown area maintains and enhances its unique, quaint character and encourages business success. Everyone – residents, business owners, landlords – are encouraged to participate. This is important stuff, people! Join Museum Educator and French Culinary Institute-educated chef Maite Gomez-Rejón for an evening of provocative art, inventive recipes and hands-on culinary technique during the HOMEmade Cooking Art History Class at El Segundo Museum of Art on Friday, January 16 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Explore the elements of art through looking, cooking and savoring with ArtBites after an informal tour of ESMoA’s current in-gallery Experience, HOME. Attendees will then work together to prepare and enjoy a seasonal meal inspired by the gallery talk which explores the themes of color, texture, line, space and shape. The fee is $95 per person (payable to ArtBites) and includes the tour, recipes, all ingredients, full sit-down meal in the gallery and wine. King Harbor Brewing Company hosts an evening of Food, Beer & Music on Friday, January 16 in the tasting room. Everyone is invited for a night full of fantastic food, craft beer and live music. Singer/songwriter, Nick Shattuck, will be featuring his collection of indie folk/soul songs for your listening pleasure. Nick is a pleasant combination of Ray LaMontagne and John Mayer and is quickly making a name for himself in the cut throat singer/songwriter community of LA. The Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation presents Studio Cabaret with Charmaine Clamor for two shows only on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17. Celebrated by The New York Times as “a gifted vocalist” and by The Los Angeles Times as “one of the important and original new jazz singers of the decade,” Filipino-American recording artist and cultural trailblazer Charmaine Clamor has earned her Queen of Jazzipino crown. The Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation presents Tomáš Kubínek: Certified Lunatic & Master of the Impossible on Saturday, January 17 for two shows only at the James Armstrong Theater. Tomáš Kubínek’s internationally acclaimed solo performances play to packed theaters around the world. After a sold-out run on Broadway, The New York Times lauded his work as “Absolutely expert!” A collision of theatre and music-hall, his exuberant one-man show is equal parts comic brilliance, virtuosic vaudeville and irresistible charm. The show is suitable for ages 6 to 106 but due to the focused nature of the performance, it is not recommended for very young children. Show times are 2 and 6 p.m. Tickets are $10, $15 and $20 per person. The eighth annual Southern California Slack Key Festival returns to the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday, January 18, for one performance only at 2 p.m. The Southern California Slack Key Festival honors one of the world’s great acoustic guitar traditions, “slack key” (ki hoʼalu) and features the most respected names in Hawaiian guitar music today in the most prestigious Hawaiian music concert event in the mainland U.S. The 2015 festival features artists Cyril Pahinui, George Kuo, Jeff Peterson, Jim “Kimo” West, Makana, Danny Carvalho, Ken Emerson, Nathan Aweau, Jeff Au Hoy, Peter Moon and more. The Redondo Beach Police Department will be offering a Citizen Police Academy beginning January 21. The Academy began in the spring of 1994 and the program is conducted once a year by the Police Department. The Academy’s purpose is to provide members of the community with a working knowledge of the Police Department along with the roles and responsibilities of its police officers. The goals of the program are accomplished through lecture, hands-on training, demonstrations and a ride-along with a police officer. The participants will meet for three hours, one night per week for fifteen weeks, in addition to a graduation night. The information covered includes police training, SWAT, traffic, criminal investigation, K-9, gangs and narcotics. There will be an emphasis on the patrol division, since it is this unit that has the majority of public contact.
