South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide June 20, 2019
Looking for something to do here in the South Bay?

Summer officially begins tomorrow and there are all sorts of summery things to do this weekend! Think drive in movie, pool party, outdoor concert, night market, art walk… we’ve got all this and more happening right in our backyard. There’s even a surf film premiere! I’m already in a summer state of mind, listening to my beach music playlist (♫Hot fun in the summertime♫). I hope you’re ready for a fun-filled season!

The community is invited to attend the El Segundo Art Walk tonight, Thursday, June 20 from 5 to 9 p.m. Located in the Downtown and Smoky Hollow districts, over thirty creative El Segundo businesses will open their doors for studio tours and become a pop-up gallery displaying original artwork of Los Angeles based artists. ESAW pairs artists with local businesses to display their work on the premises. Yes, it is an art walk, but the art is only half of the attraction. The venues are what make the event so unique. El Segundo has an abundance of remarkable and historic architecture, most of which house businesses not open to the general public. The opportunity to gain access to these distinctive spaces makes for an extraordinary experience. The evening features fine art, live music, great food and studio tours. It’s fun and it’s FREE! The El Segundo Art Walk will take place the third Thursday evening of the summer months – June 20, July 18 and August 15. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this! For additional information, visit the website at http://www.elsegundoartwalk.com/.

The City of Hermosa Beach will host a FREE Jazz Concert on Wednesday, June 26 at 7 p.m. on Pier Plaza. The concert will feature jazz musician David Benoit and special guest artists in a celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Lighthouse Café, considered the epicenter of the West Coast jazz movement since it began showcasing jazz music in 1949. Among the many great musicians to perform at the Lighthouse Café were Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Woody Herman and Chet Baker. Benoit, who grew up in Hermosa Beach and graduated from Mira Costa High School, is a GRAMMY®-nominated pianist/composer/ arranger who is considered one of the founding fathers of contemporary jazz. The City will also honor the late Ozzie Cadena, and his wife, Gloria, with a plaque installed at 6 p.m. June 26 on Pier Plaza that recognizes their important role in the jazz scene in Hermosa Beach. When the couple moved to Hermosa Beach in 1974, the plaque notes that Ozzie Cadena “was already a legend in the jazz world. By the 1980s, with Gloria by his side, he had established himself as a leading jazz promoter in Los Angeles and was booking the best the music had to offer at Hermosa Beach’s Lighthouse Café.” While jazz performers had occasionally appeared at the Lighthouse Café, it began showcasing jazz music 70 years ago, when owner John Levine permitted bassist/band leader Howard Rumsey to start a recurring Sunday jam session on a trial basis. Rumsey became club manager soon after and put together a house band called the Lighthouse All-Stars that included several jazz legends. Levine died in 1970, and Rumsey left the Lighthouse in 1971 to open another jazz club in Redondo Beach. Beginning in the mid-1990s, jazz made a comeback at the Lighthouse, and the Lighthouse Café had a starring role in the movie, La La Land, as the jazz club founded by the character portrayed by actor Ryan Gosling. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.hermosabch.org/index.aspx?page=20&recordid=6208&returnURL=%2findex.aspx. The Lighthouse Cafe is located on Pier Plaza at 30 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.

I was saddened to learn that Orlando’s Pizzeria & Birreria, located on Torrance Boulevard and Prospect Avenue, recently closed. Orlando Mule had returned to Canada over a year ago to renew his visa – his application was denied. They tried to keep the restaurant going without Chef Orlando, but the separation was tough on the young family. So last month, his wife Carole shuttered the restaurant and returned to Canada with their two children. You can read all the details in the Easy Reader article at https://easyreadernews.com/orlandos-hidden-jewel-closes/. Au revoir, Orlando’s – you’ll be missed!
