South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide June 28, 2018

Everything you want to know about the events going on in the South Bay this weekend is here!

So we all know that the Fourth of July falls on a Wednesday this year. What some of you may not know is that the City of Redondo Beach has scheduled the annual Seaside Lagoon Fireworks show for Sunday, July 1. There was a bit of back and forth at the City Council meeting a couple of weeks ago as to whether they could reschedule the event back to the 4th after numerous community members expressed their displeasure with the date change. In the words of a couple of City Council members, “It was a boneheaded decision.” Yes, it certainly was. I have no idea where that decision stands but they’re still selling tickets for the 1st. In addition, the renamed RAT Beach Fireworks Show, privately funded this year by Pedone’s Pizza and a funding site, has hit a major snag. The City of Torrance is now requiring the RAT Beach Fireworks Committee to pay $50,000 to cover police/fire expenses. I know any fireworks show requires a permit from the city, but I’m curious….. did the City charge the Briles family $50,000 for each of the 17 years they hosted it to cover those city service costs? You can read more about this debacle at https://easyreadernews.com/fourth-of-july-rat-beach-fireworks-in-limbo/ and http://tbrnews.com/news/redondo_beach/torrance-beach-july-th-fireworks-in-jeopardy/article_c563faa2-74bc-11e8-8c1c-230da2802bbe.html. Redondo Beach may not have any fireworks on the Fourth but never fear, there are other South Bay firework shows scheduled for the Fourth listed below that will surely be spectacular!

Unsure whether this event will actually happen, see opening paragraph…… The private fireworks show held off Torrance Beach on the Fourth of July returns on Wednesday, July 4 and will now be known as The RAT Beach Fireworks. Mike Russell, owner of Pedone’s Pizzeria in Redondo Beach, announced they’re going to fund the fireworks show for three of the next six years, in honor of the Pedone Family, the original owners of the restaurant. Until 2016, a local resident provided a spectacular fireworks show from a barge off Torrance Beach. Jackie Briles had been arranging and paying for the fireworks display for many years, much to the delight of the locals. The fireworks became a wildly popular, annual, neighborhood event – but when Jackie passed in 2016, the family decided it would be the last year. If you plan to attend, please be patient. The City takes drastic traffic measures and blocks off most of the residential streets, so getting in and out of the area can be frustrating. After the show, the surrounding area turns into a giant parking lot and it can take up to two hours just to get to PCH. If at all possible, leave the car at home and walk or bike to the beach.

The City of Torrance will host the Fourth of July Fireworks Show onWednesday, July 4 at 9 p.m. at the Torrance Civic Center. The 20-minute show will feature a patriotic soundtrack to complement the more than 1,000 shells being fired. The internal Civic Center parking lot will be closed for the launching of the fireworks, however surrounding parking lots will be open for the general public to view the show. In addition, the Toyota Sports Complex and a portion of the Courthouse parking lot will be open for public viewing. Tickets will be required to enter the Toyota Sports Complex viewing area. These FREE tickets are available now, and must be picked up in advance from either the Cultural Arts Center Box office at the James Armstrong Theatre (3330 Civic Center Drive) or from the Community Services Department located in the West Annex of City Hall (3031 Torrance Blvd). Box Office hours are Tuesday-Friday, from 1 to 8 p.m. and Saturdayfrom noon to 8 p.m. The Community Services Department will be open to distribute tickets today through Friday, July 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.There are a limited number of tickets available for access to the Toyota Sports complex. All other areas will be available on a first come, first served basis. There is a humongous list of prohibited items which you can view at https://www.southbaybyjackie.com/torrance-4th-july-fireworks-show/. Staff will be posted at the entrance to ensure that prohibited items do not enter the facility. The City recommends that bags not be brought into the facility, and reserves the right to conduct bag checks. Torrance CitiCABLE will broadcast the show live on Time Warner Cable Channel 3, Frontier FiOS Channel 31, over the air on KNET 25.2 and online at http://TorranceCA.Gov/CableTV/15747.htm. Gates to the Toyota Sports Complex will open at 7 p.m., and will close 30 minutes after the show ends. In an effort to protect the synthetic turf field, no food or drinks (excluding bottled water) will be allowed into the complex, and only chairs with rounded bottoms such as beach chairs will be allowed. For additional information, visit the website at https://www.torranceca.gov/services/4th-of-july. The LA County Courthouse parking lot is located at Maple Avenue, north of Torrance Blvd. The Toyota Sports Complex is located at 555 Maple Avenue.
