The Torrance Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Torrance Fire Department Awards & Appreciation Luncheon today, Thursday, May 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Torrance Memorial Medical Center’s Hoffman Health Conference Center. The event honors the community members and city staff who support the mission of the Torrance Fire Department and the brave TPD members who have distinguished themselves through outstanding performance above and beyond the call of duty and/or standard job responsibilities. The inaugural BeachLife Festival will take place Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5 at Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach. The event will take place in Ruby’s parking lot and the Seaside Lagoon with an expected 7,000 to 9,000 attendees each day and two stages featuring chart topping, national acts. The line-up includes legendary musicians Bob Weir & Wolf Bros, Brian Wilson, and Willie Nelson & Family. It’s going to be three full days of music and fun on the oceanfront. Palos Verdes Art Center / Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education proudly presents the Opening Reception: Student Art Exhibition on Friday, May 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. Featuring Palos Verdes Peninsula student work, the exhibition will highlight this year’s artistic creations from Palos Verdes Art Center school-based outreach program Art at Your Fingertips. Additionally, there will be a showcase of work produced in the PVAC artist residencies held throughout the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and works from the Wessel Photography Program, held in Harbor City. Riviera Village presents First Friday on May 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. This free, monthly event is the place to be every first Friday! Head to the Village and enjoy live music, food samplings, gallery viewing, promotional offers and more while you dine and shop. Riviera Village merchants and art galleries stay open until 8 p.m. The energy will be fueled by live music at various locations from 6 to 8 p.m. The Village has plenty of metered parking on every street, along with a large metered parking lot in the triangle bordered by South Elena Avenue, Via El Prado and Avenida del Norte, and additional parking off South Catalina Avenue and Vista Del Mar. Chroma Haze will be playing at The Lighthouse Cafe on Friday, May 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Local band Chroma Haze consists of a very talented group of young musicians with diverse influences including Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen, Paramore, Foo Fighters and Metallica. The members of Chroma Haze are Cori Wilson – Bass & Lead Vocals, Gio Conversano – Guitar, Sean Vercos – Guitar and Ethan Makauskas – Drums & Vocals. They’ve played at iconic venues such as The Whisky, The Lighthouse Cafe, The House of Blues and The Hard Rock Cafe. Several members of the band have competed and WON the Battle of The Bands at the House of Blues for 3 consecutive years. The Manhattan Beach Art Center (MBAC) presents the Opening Reception: Morphologizing on Friday, May 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. Morphologizing is an exhibition of work by Jonathan Keep, Dino Capaldi, Alec Lindsey, Karen Koblitz and more. The word “morphology” comes from the Greek word for “form.” The term now refers to a common mode of scientific analysis utilized to understand objects in terms of their parts, shapes, and structures. Morphology also explores how these parts come together to create a unified whole. This exhibition is dedicated to a morphological understanding of pottery. The artists and work featured in the exhibition encourage observers to consider each and every part, feature, and aspect of ceramic objects. They push our understanding of pottery and its relationship to art, culture, and society. Comprised of pieces from a variety of locations, time periods, and cultural perspectives, Morphologizing offers a dynamic view of pottery-making and its innumerable intersections with our daily lives. The Redondo Pier Association in partnership with King Harbor Association is pleased to announce the return of Family Movie Nights at the Redondo Beach Pier every Friday in May at 8 p.m. This free event series is presented by Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital Long Beach and will feature family-friendly movies throughout the month of May. The Redondo Pier Association welcomes visitors to arrive early and visit one of the many restaurants located on Fisherman’s Wharf, International Boardwalk and the adjacent Redondo Beach Marina for dine-in or take-out prior to the movie screening. The City of Gardena presents the annual Cinco de Mayo Parade & Celebration on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mas Fukai Park. Kick off the Cinco de Mayo celebration with a parade down Gardena Boulevard ending at Mas Fukai Park. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature City dignitaries, community groups, parade grand marshals and the Miss Cinco de Mayo Queen and her court. The City of El Segundo is proud to present the Hometown Fair & Carnival on Saturday, May 4 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Main Street at Library Park. The event features carnival rides, game booths, entertainment, music, arts and crafts, bake-off contest, community expo and more. The annual Bake-Off will take place in the Gazebo in Library Park. This year’s categories are Petit Desserts, Cookies, Breads & Pastries. Entries are accepted from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and can be delivered to the Gazebo on the day of the event. Friends of the Parks present Pets in the Park on Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. at Valley Park. Pets in the Park serves as a FUNdraiser for the Friends of the Parks non-profit organization and provides local businesses with the opportunity to brand their company and meet many of the pet owners in the South Bay. The event is also designed to help educate the community on local laws and petiquette. While we all love our pets, some pet owners aren’t aware of local ordinances and/or being responsible pet parents. Funds raised at this event go directly back to the Hermosa community parks and recreation activities like Movies on the Beach. Activities include a Pet Blessing with local clergy, face painting and DJ. The Pet Costume Parade and Pet Tricks contest are program favorites. Pup photos and family photos will be available. There will also be several pet rescue groups that will bring dogs, cats and even mini-horses that are looking for their forever home. This event is FREE to attend, but of course, Friends of the Parks always appreciate donations! Award-winning singers/songwriters Andy Hill and Renee Safier present the annual DylanFest on Sunday, May 5 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. What began as a small backyard party with talented Bob Dylan fans taking turns performing his music has evolved into an eight-hour festival attended by hundreds and featuring some of the L.A. area’s top musicians. Besides Hill and Safier and their band, Hard Rain, performers this year will include top L.A. session musician Marty Rifkin, who has toured with Bruce Springsteen. He will be among the more than 50 accomplished musicians who will perform about 65 Dylan-composed songs. The selections include interpretations of material that cover a broad spectrum of Dylan’s musical styles. Some audience members like to attend in costumes representing themes or characters in his songs. (Think Tangled Up in Blue, Just Like a Woman, or Like a Rolling Stone).
