South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide November 8, 2018

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

During the 30 + years I’ve lived in the South Bay, I’ve never experienced a line like the one at my polling place this past Tuesday - it snaked out the door and around the building. People not only didn’t seem to mind the wait, they were friendly, engaging and pretty enthusiastic. It was inspiring to experience the democratic process in such a robust manner. Everyone wanted their vote to count and there was record voter turnout throughout the country…. and as Martha Stewart would say, “It’s a good thing.” Another good thing? No more being bombarded with annoying mailers, robo-calls, TV commercials and radio ads….. at least until the next election.

Saint Rocke presents The Dan Band on Saturday, November 10 at 9 p.m. with special guest, Feed the Kitty. Dan Finnerty caught America’s attention as the foul-mouthed wedding singer in the box-office smash Old School, performing his now-infamous rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart, as well as his appearance as the sleazy bat-mitzvah singer inStarsky & Hutch and again as the inappropriate wedding singer in the record-breaking hit, The Hangover. What started as a drunken joke for Finnerty singing I Am Woman at a karaoke bar has spiraled out of control into The Dan Band – a cult phenomenon that has garnered rave reviews from The New York Times, The L.A. Times, Rolling Stone, and Variety to dub it “The hottest ticket in Hollywood.” The Dan Band plays to sold-out crowds from Los Angeles to New York and has appeared on numerous shows. Feed the Kitty isn’t just another LA band, they have earned the reputation as the hardest working band in town, if not the world. This self-managed 3 piece not only plays 300 shows a year, they have broken the top 10 all time shows played with 2,659 by any band ever, passing The Rolling Stones! FTK also records full-length albums and places original music in film/TV including an Oscar nominated movie with Ryan Gosling Lars and the Real Girl, National Lampoon: Cattle Call and recently three placements in the DirecTV show Rogue. Tickets are $45 per person. Doors open at 6 p.m. For additional information and ticket purchase, visit the website at https://www.saintrocke.com/event/8648655/the-dan-band-feed-the-kitty/. Leadership Torrance is now accepting applications. It’s no secret — Torrance and the South Bay are an amazing place to live and work. But how well do you really know your community? What would it be like to see the inner workings of business and government in Torrance, and along the way, learn from influential leaders across a variety of sectors? That opportunity is exactly what Leadership Torrance provides. Presented by the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Torrance is a unique, hands-on program focused on developing effective leaders from across the South Bay. Over the course of six months from January to June, Leadership Torrance meets one to two times a month for full day, on-site activities. The 2019 class is organizing now, and you’re invited to be part of it. Planned excursions for the upcoming class will take you on a journey through the history of Torrance, introduce you to its diverse manufacturing and industry sectors, show you the public safety and emergency services that keep us safe, and allow you to experience the K-12 and higher education offerings in our area. You’ll also explore how the community is governed, both in the City of Torrance and Los Angeles County. And, during an overnight trip to Sacramento, you’ll learn how our state government and the legislative process work. Most importantly, you’ll meet with and learn from leaders at each of these locations. How did they build their businesses? What does it take to be competitive in their industries? Why is Torrance such a great place to do business? You’ll hear the answers to questions like these from some of the people best qualified to answer them. In addition, each activity will be an opportunity to network with fellow members of your group, who will also come from a variety of industries and backgrounds. The relationships you’ll forge will last a lifetime. At the conclusion of the program, you and your cohort members will have the opportunity to bring together everything you’ve learned by planning and executing a group-led service project. Your Leadership Torrance experience will leave a lasting impact on the community through an act of meaningful service that you’ll choose and implement together. If you’re ready to discover and enhance your leadership abilities, elevate your business relationships within the community, and interact with South Bay leaders in a significant way, Leadership Torrance is for you. For additional information and to apply, visit the website at http://www.torrancechamber.com/leadership-torrance.
