Hermosa Beach Weekend Guide: South Bay By Jackie
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

I adore the rain, probably because we can never get enough of it here in Southern Cal. Ever the eternal optimist, I regularly check the weather forecast with the hope there will be some precipitation to look forward to. If you recall, a couple of weeks ago, when the remnants of that hurricane in Mexico was working its way up the coast, the weather forecasters kept promising us some form of rain: sprinkles this morning, showers tomorrow afternoon, overnight cells that could drop up to an inch and a half of rain. I was so looking forward to it, I had my raincoat and rainboots ready at the front door (pinky swear). Yeah, well, none of that ever transpired, not a drop. Fast forward to last Friday night…. we were getting ready to head out for a birthday party in Santa Monica. I was in the living room when I saw lightning and then heard thunder. I walked out on the deck and saw a huge cloud mass coming from the south, moving fast, and then I felt the first rain drops. A few minutes later, we’re in the car and on our way. It POURED the entire time it took to get to Santa Monica and continued to rain steadily the rest of the night and into morning. A friend in Santa Barbara told me they were experiencing the same weather simultaneously, so it wasn’t some minuscule, rogue cloud inadvertently dodging satellites. So, I have to ask…. how is it that not one weather forecaster, app or website predicted that storm? What’s Doppler Radar for if it misses something that big? Did the meteorologists see it and not recognize it?? Was it moving so fast they thought it was an alien spacecraft and ran for shelter??? Seriously, I’d love an explanation if any of you have one. Okay, enough with my weather obsession. There are plenty of terrific events happening this weekend that you should take advantage of simply because they require no effort to have a great time. Enjoy it while you can, because the Halloween deluge begins late next week, with the forecast calling for five or six days of relentless horror, sugar overload, frequent costume changes and the never-ending effort to satiate the little fiends’ cravings for tricks and treats.

The South Bay Artist Collective is in trouble and needs our support! I’ve gone to several shows at Resin gallery and really appreciate what they’ve brought to the community alongside the nascent art scene developing on Cypress. Over the last few years, the South Bay Artist Collective has provided the South Bay with a community art gallery – throwing 12 free-to-the-public shows during that time span, while hosting fundraisers for schools and end-of-year feature shows for MBMS and the MCHS art departments. However, due to increases in rent and operational costs, the Collective is now looking to ensure they can keep their local gallery open and running for the upcoming 2019 year. Please join the Collective for an ###strong on Saturday, November 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Resin Gallery, in an effort to keep the local gallery open for 2019. The Collective artists are each donating original artwork that will be auctioned off, with 100% of the proceeds going to the non-profit. Tickets are available for $75 at ###a href="http://www.funddeed.com/southbayartistcollective" target="_blank">http://www.funddeed.com/southbayartistcollective. Ticket holders will have access to the pre-show from 6 to 7 p.m. where they can purchase items before they become available for public bidding. Some items will only be available for ticket holders, such as bids for original commissioned artwork.
Figured I’d include this nugget because, well, ‘tis the season (yes, Halloween has its own season now)…… This Halloween, sink your fangs into one of the creepiest pies you’ll ever see. Mickey’s Deli is known for creating bizarre and unusual food items throughout the month of October and this year, they’ve created an item unlike anything they’ve ever done before. With the popularity of the eerie Halloween food trend combined with the popularity of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Mickey’s is the first pizzeria to combine the two – the result, The Spicy Spooky Cheeto Pizza. Don’t be fooled by its burnt-like appearance upon first glance, the pizza is actually very tasty. The black hue is created by kneading activated charcoal into the fresh homemade dough. But don’t worry, in terms of flavor, activated charcoal doesn’t have much. Next, two types of cheese are added. Mickey’s first pizza to have multiple kinds of cheese! The Mozzarella provides a creamy mild taste while the cheddar gives the pizza a balance of flavor and sharpness. To top it off, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos are baked on top adding a bit of spice to every bite while perfectly complimenting the various flavors. This Spicy Spooky Cheeto Pizza only comes in a size large and will be served throughout the month of October. Make sure to stop by to get your “instagramable” food post before the month ends. Eat at your own risk. Mickey’s Deli is located at 101 Hermosa Avenue in Hermosa Beach.
