Summer officially begins on Sunday and this weekend offers a wealth of classic summertime activities that go hand-in-hand with the Father’s Day celebration: take a run on the beach during the lowest tide of the season, compete in a volleyball tournament, kick off Beer Week, watch a movie on the boardwalk, learn important bicycling skills or enjoy a free concert in the park. Sunday is the longest day of the year so you’ll have lots of daylight to spend some quality time with Dad!

The community is invited to celebrate art in El Segundo on the third Thursday evening during the summer months. The El Segundo Art Walk will take place tonight, Thursday, June 18 from 5 to 9 p.m. Located in the Downtown and Smoky Hollow districts, the El Segundo Art Walk includes over 20 local businesses displaying the work of dozens of local artists. The Riviera Village Business Improvement District hosts the Monthly Mixer tonight, Thursday, June 18 at Hennessey’s from 6 to 8 p.m. All who live, work and enjoy Riviera Village are welcome to attend. The Redondo Pier Association hosts the second season of Movies on the Boardwalk at the Redondo Beach Pier continuing on Friday, June 19 at 8 p.m. This free event will feature movies every Friday evening throughout the month of June where the International Boardwalk meets the Redondo Beach Pier below Kincaid’s in the octagon. The feature film this week is Earth to Echo. These events are free and open to the public and take place between 8 and 10 p.m. Movies begin at dusk so times will vary. The Redondo Beach Pier is located at the end of Torrance Boulevard, west of Pacific Coast Highway.

Start your summer on the right foot at the annual Manhattan Beach 5K on Saturday, June 20. Bring the whole family and run/walk during the lowest tide of the season. The MB5K starts and finishes under the Manhattan Beach Pier. Participants will race north to the jetty at 45 Street and back. The super low tide creates a perfect running surface of hard packed sand like a dirt road so running with or without shoes is an option (the faster athletes tend to wear shoes). One can even wear track spikes! Baby joggers work great and are encouraged. Packet Pick Up and Late Registration is Friday, June 19 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Village Runner located at 1840 Sepulveda Boulevard in Manhattan Beach and from 6 a.m. to7 a.m. at the Manhattan Pier on race day. Fees are $40 for the 5K and $30 for the kids races for late registration. Kids can do the 5K or compete in their own race after the main event in the Little Kid’s Dash. Adults have a chance to watch the kids race up and down at age appropriate distances. Cool awards and a chance to stand on the podium to the top five in the following divisions: 2 and under, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12. Cool beachy T-shirts are guaranteed to all pre-registered runners and to late registrants while supplies last. The World Famous Cookie Medals will go to the top 5 with a chance to stand on the podium in all 28 age divisions. The kid’s races have the same cool awards as the adults! Rock & Brews El Segundo will host three standout events during L.A. Beer Week from June 20 through June 28. Headlining the impressive series of events is Maui Brewing Comapny Founder, Garrett Marrero. A rock star in the craft beer world, Marrero will be bringing a collection of Maui Brewing Company beers with him to Rock & Brews, many of which have never been poured on the mainland before. He will be the guest of honor at a Luau & Pig Roast on June 20 from 6 to 11 p.m. During the event, Marrero will also host a question and answer session, giving craft beer enthusiasts the chance to pick the brain of one of the beer industry’s top brew masters. In addition to the restaurant’s full menu featuring quality American comfort food, a special wood roasted pulled pork platter will be available, featuring Kahlua pork, potato mac salad, sticky rice, island slaw and a brioche roll for $14.95. The event will run from 6 to 11 p.m. On June 25 from 6 to 11 p.m., Rock & Brews will showcase King Harbor Brewing Company. As the winner of the Inaugural Brewery Bracket, King Harbor Brewing will celebrate with a Tap Takeover. In March, King Harbor beat out 63 other breweries in a March Madness-style bracket at the restaurant to be named the first ever Golden Keg champion. For the finale, Rock & Brews will showcase a local favorite with an El Segundo Brewing Company Cask Night on June 28 from 6 to 11 p.m. offering a one of kind beer that is a collaborative effort between Rock & Brews and El Segundo Brewing Company. The brewery’s White Dog IPA has been Pina Colada-fied with the addition of coconut, pineapple, and rum soaked oak chips, making a refreshing summer drink. The “real ale,” meaning it is unfiltered, unpasteurized beer made in the most traditional way, will only be available while supplies last. Get lit with the Fly Buddha! Cancer Support Community-Redondo Beach (CSC-RB) will team up with the Redondo Beach Pier Association, Fly Buddha and The Green Yogi to present Yoga in the Octagon on Saturday, June 20. These free classes will take place the third Saturday of every month, are an hour long and begin at 10 a.m. in the octagon below Kincaid’s. The Fly Buddha, an inspirational lifestyle brand founded by cancer survivor Sara Krish, is partnering with The Green Yogi for an awesome yoga experience. Instructors will lead a 60 minute all level yoga class while DJ Gadachy fills the air with motivating beats. All levels from beginner to yoga aficionados are welcome. Participants should bring a yoga mat, towel and water. The public is encouraged to invite a friend and join the fun to down dog, down shift and donate all in the name of CSC-RB’s mission of support, education and hope for cancer patients and their families. Beach Cities Cycling Club (BCCC) will be conducting a safety course, Bicycling Traffic Skills 101, on Saturday June 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Beach Cities Health District in Redondo Beach. The course is taught by experienced volunteer League of American Bicyclists Instructors as well as USA Cycling Coaches and is designed to teach bicyclists how to safely maneuver on the road. The class covers traffic laws, roadway positioning, crash avoidance, flat tire change, basic on-bike handling skills and more. Students will walk away from the course with greater knowledge, skill and confidence of how to safely ‘drive’ a bicycle in traffic. The City of Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department celebrates all things paternal with the annual Father’s Day Beach Volleyball Tournament on Sunday, June 21 from 9 to noon. This year, forget the ties and grooming products! This is a fun way for the kids to spend some quality time with pops (while mom enjoys a little downtime)! There are four different age divisions:

10 and under (short court)
11 to 14 (short court)
15 to 18 (short court)
Four Person – All Ages (long court)

Registration is $100 per team. All participants will receive a T-shirt and other giveaways. This is a recreational tournament with pool play only. Proceeds from the event benefit Project Fatherhood. Howlin’ Ray’s, the brand new food truck specializing in Nashville style hot chicken, is looking for a few brave souls to compete in their first Hot Chicken Eating Challenge at King Harbor Brewery this Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21. The only rule during this challenge is simply to finish the chicken the fastest without any beverages. The winner will be rewarded with a growler of their choice from King Harbor along with some swag to take home. The event begins at noon with the competition starting promptly at 1:30 p.m. For those who can’t handle such heat but simply love amazing chicken, Howlin’ Ray’s will be serving their full menu all day until they run out…..so get there early. It’s summertime in the South Bay and you know what that means – free, outdoor concerts! The City of El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department is proud to present the2015 Summer Concerts in the Park series sponsored by Chevron. These free concerts take place on select Sunday evenings at Library Park located at the 600 block of Main Street in beautiful downtown El Segundo. Activities begin at 4 p.m. with the music starting at 4:30 and running until 6 p.m. This Sunday, June 21 features Lights – A Tribute to Journey.
