The public is invited to attend the Manhattan Beach Young Entrepreneurs Academy Investor Panel Presentationstonight, Thursday, May 7 at Verandas Beach House. Sponsored by the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA) is a year-long program that teaches students in grades 6 through 12 how to start and run their own businesses. During the Investor Panel Presentation, each young entrepreneur will have six minutes to present his/her business plan, demonstrate a prototype and request start-up funding. The panel of investors will ask questions before deliberating and awarding seed money to each business or nonprofit organization. There will be a meet and greet reception prior to the presentations. Women from the South Bay and beyond are invited to the second annual South Bay Women’s Conference: Women Celebrating Women on Friday, May 8. Organized by the South Bay Business Women’s Association (SBBWA), this full-day event will welcome purpose-driven and service-minded women into a motivational environment of empowerment, respect, laughter and learning, while providing college scholarships to South Bay women in need. The South Bay Women’s Conference will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Torrance Marriott South Bay. Attendees will experience inspiring and educational speakers in both General Session and interactive break-out programs. The day will include introduction of past scholarship recipients, networking during a three-course lunch, and specialty boutique vendors. The event will culminate with a high energy networking reception, ensuring many lasting connections. SouthBay Magazine presents the third annual Girl’s Night Out on Friday, May 8 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Civic Center Plaza in Downtown Manhattan Beach, produced in partnership with Choura Events. A portion of the proceeds from this wildly popular event will benefit the Special Olympics World Games LA 2015 Beach Cities Host Town program and be split evenly between Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and El Segundo. The evening will feature a fashion show with more than 30 looks showcased on the runway and guests will learn what’s trending this summer from fashion stylist, Tanya Monaghan. The Women’s Club of Redondo Beach is proud to host the eighth annual Redondo Beach Firefighters Community Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, May 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. The event will coincide with the Redondo Beach Fire Department Open House which takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will culminate with the spaghetti dinner, prepared and served by the Redondo Beach Firemen, at the Woman’s Club historical clubhouse located across the street from the fire station at 400 South Broadway. The event features a silent auction, bake sale and entertainment with a ‘Tribute to Frank Sinatra’. Tickets to the Community Spaghetti Dinner are $15 per person. Kids 8 and under eat for free. The City of Manhattan Beach, in collaboration with partners throughout the Beach Cities, will host the first FeelGood Festival on Saturday, May 9 at Polliwog Park. The event features a day filled with yoga in the park, a farmers’ market, live music and arts and crafts. Pre-registration and a fee of $35 are required for the featured Yoga in the Park beginning at 9 a.m. Gather with friends and family to move, love and celebrate each other in the sunshine and unite as a South Bay tribe while practicing yoga in this outdoor class for all levels. Local studio instructors will be led by Tiffany Friedman of Haute Yogi MB. Quiet the mind and inspire the body through breath and movement and live music in this 90 minute class. A special gift of gratitude from Manduka and Onzie will be provided to all yogis. There will be four FREE yoga classes beginning at 11 a.m. followed by belly dancing and pilates demos. In addition, a FREE concert in the park begins at 3 p.m. with Soul on Tap and The Brown Bag followed by Mexika and Danza Yankuititl, “Music and Dance of Ancient Mexico”. The recent earthquake in Nepal has devastated the region, leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands homeless. In the aftermath of this terrible tragedy a world away, many of us wonder how we can make a difference. On Saturday, May 9, breweries and tap rooms around Los Angeles and Orange County will take part in Crawl 4 Nepal, a craft beer crawl fundraising effort to aid the victims of this disaster. Each participating business will have at least one beer on draft as their “donation beer”. Join King Harbor Brewing Company as they do their part on Saturday, May 9. This is an all-day fundraiser, beginning at noon and running through 9 p.m. For every purchase of Storm’s A-Brewin’, King Harbor Brewing Company will donate 50% of the proceeds to Global Giving to help raise relief funds for the victims of the devastating Nepal 7.8 earthquake. The City of Rolling Hills Estates welcomes area residents to join local boy and girl scouts at the 58 annual Mayor’s Breakfast Ride, which will be held on Saturday, May 9. Local equestrians are invited to meet at Chandler Park at 8 a.m. and saddle up for a tour of beautiful scenic trails. Chandler Park is located at the northwest corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Palos Verdes Drive North, just west of Rolling Hills Estates City Hall. The tour will conclude at Ernie Howlett Park, located at 25851 Hawthorne Boulevard, where scouts will be serving pancakes, sausage, eggs, coffee, tea, juice and milk from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Advanced breakfast tickets can be purchased from local girl, cub or boy scouts for only $3. Tickets will also be sold the day of the event for $5. Proceeds will go directly to the participating scout units. The Environmental Priorities Network presents the 2015 South Bay Solar and Green Homes Tour on Saturday, May 9 at various locations throughout the South Bay. Attendees can check out up to ten homes that have been designed with a variety of features that are environmentally friendly, conserve resources and save money over time. These include features such as drought-tolerant landscaping and other water-wise systems, rooftop solar photovoltaic and hot water solar collectors, plug-in electric vehicles, urban farming, energy efficiency features and much more. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes ten stops in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance. The program is sponsored by the Environmental Priorities Network, a local South Bay volunteer group that meets monthly and focuses on grassroots environmental activities to educate and inspire the public to take positive action in their own lives. Gallery H is proud to present the Opening Reception: These into That (2010-2015): Found Objects Art on Saturday, May 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. These into That (2010-2015): Found Objects Art features the work of Ben Zask, a Palos Verdes artist specializing in working with found objects and converting them into original pieces of art. He works with objects from the pre-plastic era of the early 20th century. The exhibition is curated by Gloria Plascencia. In addition, there will be an Artist Talk and Interactive Demo for all ages on Saturday, May, 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. Gallery H is located at 12619 Hawthorne Boulevard in Hawthorne. The Daily Breeze of the South Bay will host the seventh annual Successful Aging Expo on Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Torrance Marriot. This FREE, one-day event is designed especially for people ages 40 to 100 and will be rich in resources and information. Visitors and participants will have the opportunity to visit over 50 booths of companies and firms with something of value to offer for young adults, baby boomers, those in mid-life and older adults. Last year, over 3,500 people attended. As a special preview to the Expo, the Daily Breeze will publish a “Successful Aging” program on Thursday, May 7 that will include a list of exhibitors, floor plan, scheduled events and speakers and their topics. The Torrance Public Library invites families to a Healthy Family Field Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 9 at Charles H. Wilson Park in Torrance. Local agencies and businesses will be on hand to share health and wellness opportunities. Families also can see live fitness performances and demonstrations, listen to music and play in the park. The Torrance Certified Farmers’ Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. giving participants an opportunity to buy fresh food and learn about healthy, local produce. Healthy Family Field Day is part of the Torrance Public Library’s GET Project: A Healthier Family Initiative that encourages people to get moving, get informed and get healthy. April’s Fools puts its comedic spin on Foolish Hollywood Blockbusters on Saturday, May 9 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Second Story Theater in Hermosa Beach. April’s Fools is a comedy improv troupe of 16 eclectic, electric, and eccentric souls all focused on making people laugh. Directors Sandy Marchese and Lorna Silva and a cast of fools will take suggestions from the audience and work together to create characters, scenes and hilarity while poking fun at Hollywood blockbusters. The show is intended for audiences 13 and older due to some adult content. General admission tickets are $10; $8 for seniors; and can be purchased at the box office or online. Ego Fine Art Gallery presents ELEMENTS: SEA-AIR-LAND, a limited engagement exhibition by local photographer Kevin Gilligan. The show features unique aerial photography images of coastal Los Angeles for two days only, Saturday, May 9 from 6 to 10 p.m. and Sunday, May 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Opening Reception on May 9 will feature the craft beer of King Harbor Brewing Company and the delicious confections of Marsatta Fancy Chocolates. Gilligan provides a fresh perspective of urban L.A.’s stunning beach landscapes, including aerials of the coast from Santa Monica through the South Bay Cities of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes and San Pedro. The rarely captured perspectives were created from images taken from a fixed-wing aircraft at sunrise during an exceptionally clear post-rainstorm week in Los Angeles. In addition to the aerial photographs, selected black-and-white images from greater Los Angeles and the Colorado Rockies will also be on display. Gilligan visited Rocky Mountain National Park in the fall of 2014 and shot a series of black and white landscapes that capture the beauty, power and stillness of the Rocky Mountains.
