Student Wins Water is Life Art Contest

A Hermosa Beach school student has won West Basin Municipal Water District's Water is Life Student Art Contest and been awarded a Mac Book Pro lap top computer.

Bailey Sarria, an 8th grader at Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Hermosa Beach, is the Middle School Grand Prize Winner, as announced by West Basin. 

Bailey's original, hand-drawn artwork, along with the winning art by an elementary and high school student, will be reproduced on bookmarks and posters for distribution at public libraries and the winners' schools.

More than 390 submissions were received from 43 public and private schools in West Basin's service area. The winning art pieces were selected based on the creativity of their portrayal of water conservation messages and artistic skill.

“The Water is Life Student Art Contest is one of our premier water education programs," said Carol W. Kwan, West Basin president. "It is a creative way to bring the conservation message to our young students. Each year, we are amazed and impressed with the artwork we receive.”

Contest sponsors this year were the law offices of Lemieux and O’Neill, United Water and the Water Replenishment District.

West Basin, a wholesale water district serving nearly 1 million people in 17 cities and unincorporated areas throughout its 185-square mile service area, has launched a Water Reliability 2020 program to double conservation, double recycled water production and add desalted ocean water to its portfolio by 2020.
