The Puppy Chronicles: Mac's Loving Life

Mac is living in the moment.

Mac has been bouncing around the backyard like a dog who hasn't a care in the world. Other than the shaved back leg and the shaved pain patch spot on the back of his neck, you would never know, looking at him, he was hit by a car a month and a half ago. At that point, he was really thin and covered in fleas.  Now, he's healthily plump, flea free, and happy.

He's learning to go to the bathroom in the dog run, although when he greets us when we get home he sometimes pees a little in excitement. Today, Brian, my husband, came home from a trip and picked Mac up and held him on his back. Mac began peeing straight into the air giving new meaning to the words “Old Faithful.”

He knows the sound of the “treat” cabinet door and comes running. He recognizes the scent of the peanut butter jar as it's opened. His snout may have been broken in the accident, but his sense of smell is healthy and thriving.

Mac helped Togi celebrate his 3rd birthday by eating some of Togi's cake and wearing a silly party hat. Mac's becoming part of the family. The two share an appreciation for sticks, which are Togi's second favorite thing to chew on after any round ball-like object.

I'm so happy that he's able to be here to do these things. I think he knows he's been given a second chance.  I think he knows that he could have died and that he's lucky.  I see it in the way he tosses himself to the ground to play with Togi.  I see it in the way he prances across the yard after a thrown ball. It shows in his eagerness to fit in with us. He is always ready for an adventure as well as a snuggle. I look at him and I see a dog who is doing what he's suppose to do: play, be carefree, full of life and living in the moment.

Being in the moment can be difficult for humans between stress, work, family responsibility, finances, simply living in the moment can be next to impossible, but dogs seem to be experts at it. It's what I've learned from my dogs. It's why I enjoy them so much.
