East by Northeast: Scoping Out Highland Park's Chinese Food Restaurants
Some suggestions to help you fill your plate upon hearing the call of umami.
There are those that eat to live, and those that live to eat.
I live to eat, to cook and to share meals with people I love. I even enjoy meals with people I’m not that fond of. Meals with strangers can even be an adventure, too.
I’m an adventurous eater--not squeamish. I love textures, smells, and spices. I love subtle and delicate flavors. I crave umami. I love food.

at 6441 N. Figueroa St, across from , is a Chinese restaurant like there used to be. They offer real American Chinese food. Chop suey, egg foo yong, sweet and sour pork, egg rolls--all of your favorites are offered here. They also have excellent Chinese dishes. The dining room is friendly and a good place to bring the kids.
The modestly named , located at 6320 N. Figueroa St. in the shopping plaza and a few doors from Figueroa Produce, is a great place to go if you want something good, cheap and fast. Mainly a take-out shop, their generous portions of food will satisfy. Their food will also answer the umami call. The food is being made fresh in the back, and almost ready for you when you walk in the door.
, at 6300 York Blvd., diagonally across from Rite-Aid, is a solid restaurant, with dine-in, take-out, and buffet options. Their buffet is a good value, and available for lunch and dinner. And they have beer. A couple of years ago I ordered their roasted duck. It's a couple of bucks more than what you'll pay in Chinatown, but I saved a trip when only a roasted duck would do.
, at 5532 York Blvd., is a very friendly place. And they have not just Chinese dishes, but also Filipino selections. If you aren’t familiar with the marvelous goodness of Filipino food, this is a good place to start your education.
, at 5465 N. Figueroa, in the shopping center at the corner of Ave. 54, is a place with generous portions of inexpensive fast food. And with the selections all pictured on the wall in front of you, you won’t feel shy about ordering something you’ve never had before. Experiment!
at 5900 Monterey Rd., next to the , has both Thai and Chinese foods to choose from. I haven’t been in to eat there in a while, but I have enjoyed their Thai take-out many times. Judging by their Thai selections, the Chinese must be yummy.
