Emerson College Makes Progress on its Hollywood Campus

Its new building will primarily house the school's internship program.

Emerson College is getting closer to the completion of its Los Angeles campus here in Hollywood.

The Boston-based college is building on a 37,350-square-foot lot located at 5960 W. Sunset Blvd. at Gordon Street.

The $85 million-dollar building will be large enough to house 220 students who will both live in and attend classes there, according to Andy Tiedemann, Emerson College’s vice president of communications and marketing.

Emerson students currently take classes in a rented space in Burbank.

The Emerson Los Angeles internship program began more than 25 years ago. Up to 100 students, who are primarily seniors, participate in the program each semester and take courses as well as take part in a 20-hour per week internship in the entertainment industry.

“When the new facility is fully operational, Emerson's new LA program will offer graduate level courses for the first time and continuing education/executive education programs for the first time as well,” Tiedemann said. “In addition, a number of undergraduates will come out to Los Angeles and take a full four courses during their time there and will not have internships.”

When the new building is completed, it will also house a café that will be open to the public as well as film screenings and special events, Tiedemann said.

It is expected to open in early January 2014.
