New Leak Floods Santa Monica Boulevard In West Hollywood: Report

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA — A valve leak sent water and mud across part of Santa Monica Boulevard Thursday morning, prompting officials to close part of the thoroughfare, according to a report.

The flooding covered a section of sidewalk near Laurel Avenue and appeared to extend for about a block in front of several businesses, according to KTLA.

Eastbound lanes of Santa Monica Boulevard near Crescent Heights Boulevard were shut down, the station reported.

West Hollywood Vice Mayor Danny Hang told KTLA he received a report of the leak at about 6:30 a.m. City workers contained it within roughly an hour, he said.

Affected businesses were being notified, but officials did not expect the leak to affect residents.

Initial assessments indicated the flooding was caused by a valve leak on a separate line from the major water main break that occurred about two miles away one week earlier, Hang told the station.

Westbound traffic remained open Thursday morning.

The earlier rupture at Sunset Boulevard and Holloway Drive sent millions of gallons of water through West Hollywood after a 36-inch trunk line failed. Crews discovered another leak in that line Wednesday night, potentially delaying repairs that had been expected to conclude Thursday night or Friday morning.

The affected area near Sunset Boulevard remained closed while repair work continued.
