And the Oscar Goes To ... The Wrong Winner

For several minutes, everyone thought La La Land won the award. Oops.

In perhaps the biggest upset of Oscars history, and all too reminiscent of a now-infamous Miss Universe mishap with Steve Harvey, the Academy award for Best Picture was mistakingly given to the wrong film.

Actors Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were tasked with opening the red envelope of results and handing over the Oscar statue to the winning cast and crew. After appearing to struggle with reading the card, Beatty handed it to Dunaway who exclaimed "La La Land!"

As things seemed to be wrapping up for the evening with the usual announcement, tweet from the Academy and acceptance speeches, the crowd was stunned when one of the acceptance speeches took a turn.

"We lost, by the way."

"There's a mistake."

"This is not a joke."

"Moonlight has won best picture."

The audience didn't know whether to believe the chaotic chatter on stage or if it was another stunt. As it began to sink in, the cast and crew of "Moonlight" headed up to accept their award.

"Personally, I blame Steve Harvey for this," Kimmel said. "Warren, what did you do?!"

"I opened the envelope, and it said, Emma Stone, La La Land," Beatty explained. "That's why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn't trying to be funny."

"Moonlight's" key members eventually took to the microphone next for their acceptance.

"I knew I would screw this show up, I really did," Kimmel closed the show by saying. "I promise, I'll never come back."
