Safes Dumped Off Mullholland Drive Remain A Mystery
After authorities hoisted a 600-pound safe up a steep ravine in the Hollywood Hills, safecrackers got to work for the LAPD.
HOLLYWOOD, CA — The mystery of the 600-pound safe found off the side of Mulholland Drive this week continues today as police search for clues as to how it ended up in the brush down a steep embankment in the Hollywood Hills.
After the Los Angeles Fire Department spent three hours painstakingly hoisting up the 4 1/2 foot-, 600-pound steel safe, the Los Angeles Police Department opened the safe with the help of safecrackers.
"They opened it up, and there was nothing inside," said Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Hector Guzman.

It was one of two empty safes found in the brush, and investigators will have to find out where they came from to figure out how they ended up alongside Mullholland Drive.
"They are trying to find out who the owner is," Guzman said.

As of yet, no one has come forward to claim the safes.
The effort to hoist the massive safe up the hillside near the Universal City overlook on Tuesday attracted widespread attention from residents and visitors.
There was no shortage of speculation about the mysterious safes. According to the LAPD, they may have been used to store guns.
“It could very well have been taken in a burglary or robbery,” LAPD Detective Tim Kirkpatrick told NBC Los Angeles. “It’s evidence and we want to follow up on all leads possible.”
