Woman, Two Children in Grave Condition After Apparent Drowning in Hollywood Motel Pool

The three were not breathing when a passerby pulled them from the water.

UPDATE at 6:36 p.m.: A woman and two children sank to the bottom of a Hollywood motel swimming pool today and were pulled apparently lifeless from the water and taken to hospitals in grave condition.

Neither the woman nor the two children were breathing when they were pulled from the pool at the Hollywood Premiere motel, 5333 Hollywood Blvd., near Western Avenue, around 3:30 p.m., and none had a pulse, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

Paramedics performed CPR as they were taken to hospitals -- the woman to Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital and the children to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. As of 6 p.m., they were still fighting for their lives at the hospitals.

A man and woman were with four children at the pool when a boy and a girl, aged 11 and 12, strayed to the deep end, fire department officials.

The woman, 36, tried to the help the children, but she could not swim and she and the children all slipped under the water, which is 7 1/2 feet deep. She was dressed in street clothes and jumped in when she saw the children in trouble, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A passerby saw the three at the bottom of the pool and pulled them from the water and performed CPR on them. He said he had just learned CPR.

There was no lifeguard at the pool, but it is fenced.

Crisis teams were at the scene assisting the man and other two children, fire officials said.
