• Huntington Beach to conduct extensive financial review of proposed sports complex overhaul (ocregister.com) — Huntington Beach officials are rethinking the costly Sports Complex overhaul, ordering in‑depth financial, environmental and operational reviews before committing nearly $20 million and a 20‑year lease extension. With the city currently losing about $1 million annually on the facility, leaders are weighing turf fields, new lighting, an indoor training center and fairer revenue sharing, while promising more benefits and access for local residents. 
• Lifeguards save lives. California is only now recognizing them as first responders (timesofsandiego.com) — California has just moved to formally recognize open-water lifeguards as first responders, a change that directly affects the busy beaches of Huntington Beach, where large holiday crowds and rip currents strain limited lifeguard resources. The nonbinding resolution won't immediately change pay or benefits, but advocates say it's a crucial first step toward better protections and staffing for the lifeguards who patrol California's coastline.
• Dog owners see 'ugly stuff' but provide valued work for OC crime victims (ocregister.com) — A deadly crash along Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, which killed a Garden Grove pastor riding his bike, is one of the tragedies inspiring Orange County's PANDA therapy dog program for crime victims. Specially trained dogs and their volunteer handlers quietly comfort children and adults through court hearings and meetings with prosecutors, offering calm support during some of their hardest moments.
