📰 News we're reading

1. California seeks more fines from Huntington Beach in housing fight (wheninyourstate.com) — Huntington Beach faces renewed pressure from California over its housing plan, with the state asking a court to reinstate $50,000‑per‑month fines until required zoning changes are finished. City leaders adopted a new housing element in June, but regulators say it still falls short, leaving taxpayers potentially on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars if compliance isn't reached before key October court dates.

2. Best of Orange County 2026: Best craft brewery (ocregister.com) — Green Cheek Beer Co., which operates a taproom in Huntington Beach, has been named one of Orange County's top craft breweries by Register readers. The small, neighborhood-focused brewery emphasizes laid-back taproom culture, award-winning West Coast IPAs, and limited distribution, giving local beer fans another celebrated spot to gather close to home.

3. Nisum to bring AI pilot to production insights to RetailClub 2026 (startupbeat.com) — Huntington Beach will host the RetailClub AI Festival 2026 from September 22–24, drawing about 2,000 retail and technology leaders to town. Consulting firm Nisum will lead sessions on turning AI pilots into profitable, scalable projects, adding a high-profile business and networking opportunity for local tech workers, retailers, and service providers around the city's hotels and venues.

4. Fed under Warsh hands down unanimous September rate decision (investmentnews.com) — Finance experts gathered at the Future Proof festival in Huntington Beach this week were already bracing for the Federal Reserve's first interest‑rate hike in three years, which has now arrived. The Fed raised its benchmark rate to 3.75%–4%, and speakers warned more hikes could follow, meaning higher borrowing costs and choppier markets for local homeowners, investors, and businesses.
