Big Waves, Strong Rip Currents Expected at San Diego Beaches

A west-to-northwest swell is expected.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY -- A west to northwest swell is expected to bring big waves and strong rip currents to local beaches today. A National Weather Service beach hazards statement advising of 3- to 6-foot surf with sets to 7 feet along San Diego County's west-facing beaches will be in effect from 6 a.m. through Monday afternoon.

Forecasters said the swell would ease up Saturday, but a second and somewhat larger swell would hit Sunday and Monday.

Strong rip currents could cause problems for swimmers, especially those with little experience in the water. Beachgoers are advised to obey posted warning signs, use caution in and near the water and stay within the view of lifeguards. If caught in a rip current, a swimmer should swim parallel to the coast until able to break free.
