Buttercups and Dandelions

This week I found a friend I haven't seen for over 50 years. This poem is about those innocent years between childhood and adolescence. Before the madness.

There was a time long ago

When children played outside

Jump rope and red rover

Hide and seek, count to 10

I can’t find you, I’m it again

BC (before computers), there was

A quiet time,  she placed a buttercup

Under my chin, told me I liked butter

We made necklaces out of dandelions

Until they cut the lawns

And I cried for days because

The beautiful flowers were gone

I remember the girl with golden hair,

French twist and ponytail

A BFF today

I’m glad I found my friend again

And remembered a time

When life was a necklace

From a strand of dandelions
