Parents have often approached me and asked how soon should we start our child in learning how to paint or draw. The answer differs with each child as to their desire to participate in the arts. When a child shows a continual interest in any art then I think it is a good time to start the young person in that which he or she shows an interest.
My best example of this is my youngest professional artist. Osmar Pete Hernandez started with me at the age of 19 months. He showed a great interest in painting and I suggested to his mother to bring him to the art classes. Well he has been with us ever since. Osmar started in by helping us with a big mural where he was free to paint on a large wall but his ability was amazing for someone so young. Within a few months he began painting on canvas and soon starting selling his paintings. He how at the age of four has sold six paintings and two photographs for an amount over $1,150.00.
If one is to know when their child should start, parents must be aware of what their child is interested in and be dedicated to the growth of that child. In the case of Osmar, well his parents are dedicated to his education and are there for him every minute. Osmar now has a little brother, Aaron. Both Omar and Alicia bring Aaron to class and all the events that Osmar participates in and it is truly amazing how Aaron is picking things up. He is 13 months old and is already showing an interest in the arts. He loves music and one can see him dancing when there is any kind of music playing.
