IB Mayor Calls For Investigation Of Attack On Protesters
"We cannot allow the ugly legacy of violent racism and white supremacy to continue in our city," Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina said.
IMPERIAL BEACH, CA — The mayor of Imperial Beach requested Sunday that the San Diego Sheriff's Department investigate an attack on peaceful protesters and deem the incident a hate crime.
The Imperial Beach protest was one of many demonstrations against police brutality and racial injustice Sunday throughout the county.
The incident took place during a peaceful protest Sunday afternoon at the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza, according to Mayor Serge Dedina.

"We cannot allow the ugly legacy of violent racism and white supremacy to continue in our beach city," Dedina said on Twitter.
No further information was provided regarding the "violent assault," but other city officials also spoke out about the incident.

"Imperial Beach does not tolerate racism or racist violence period," Councilwoman Paloma Aguirre said. "We will not stand for it."
"I stand in solidarity with my colleagues denouncing hate and violence against peaceful protestors," Councilman Mark West said.
Other protests throughout the county were reported to be peaceful, with large crowds marching in Chula Vista and Santee city streets Sunday afternoon.
