'The Last Emperor' (1987) starring John Lone (born in Hong Kong Oct. 13, 1952) , Joan Chen and Peter O'Toole was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. This is a dramatic history of Pu Yi, the last of the Emperors of China, from his lofty birth and brief reign in the Forbidden City. He was the object of worship by half a billion people, through his abdication, his decline and dissolute lifestyle, his exploitation by the invading Japanese, and finally to his obscure resistance as just another peasant in the People's Republic. He was a young man spoilt by many luxuries of monarchy and in the end a poor peasant working in a garden of a prison camp. The film is brilliant. While the Oscars have always contrived to ignore the true best picture for the last three decades, here is a truly best picture winner which beat the competition by miles.
