State Releases Latest High School Graduation Rates

Compared to other schools, IB's Mar Vista performed above its district and the state average but below the San Diego County average. The school's English Learner students exceeded district, county and state rates.

The California Department of Education released 2009-2010 high school graduation rates Thursday which found 376 of 459 Mar Vista students completed high school, above Sweetwater Union High School District and state averages but below the San Diego County average.

That puts Mar Vista roughly in the middle of the pack in its district, with graduation rates above several schools but below schools like Bonita Vista, Chula Vista and Eastlake, who reported the highest graduation rate at 93.8 percent.

The Poway Unified School District was the top performing district in San Diego County, with a 95 percent graduation rate, while 77.6 percent of Sweetwater seniors received their high school diplomas.

10 percent more Mar Vista girls students graduated than boys, and girls consistently performed in San Diego County and statewide.

More than 70 percent of Mar Vista's English Learner students graduated, 15 percent above the state average.

Among different ethnic groups, African American students had the highest rate of dropout, with 30.1 percent of black students statewide failing to graduate high school. 23 percent of American Indian students also dropped out.
