Free Plein Air Painting Session in the Angeles
U.S. Forest Service's Chilao Visitor' Center hosts a family-friendly day in the woods with artist's workshop, nature hikes and Smokey Bear

If you and your family love the Angeles National Forest, don’t miss this upcoming Sunday’s event at the Chilao Visitor Center. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with a guided nature walk with one of our most knowledgeable volunteers, Dane. This will be a leisurely stroll along the Creekside Trail where chapparal and riparian areas converge. Although this is an easy jaunt with little elevation gain, please come prepared by bringing sunscreen, drinking water, and comfortable shoes. Binoculars are also recommended to help identify the multitude of birds that reside in Chilao.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., our friendly Forest Service biologist will be back again to show off her impressive collection of live snakes, including the fan favorite Rosy Boa. She will also have a collection of animal skulls and pelts. This is a great opportunity for any of you that have a snake phobia to face your fears and learn more about these fascinating creatures.
Also beginning at 10 a.m. will be a plein air painting workshop with Allan Roman Reyes. Allan will be bringing extra canvases, paint, and brushes, but please feel free to bring your own supplies. For those of you that have stopped by the visitor center over the last 4 months, Allan is the artist who created the beautiful pieces that are currently on display inside the facility.

Lastly, the always kid-friendly Smokey Bear will be making a special appearance between the hours of 11 am - 1 pm. Smokey had such a great time at the visitor center on his 70th birthday party back on August 9th that he was clawing to make a return visit. So, bring your camera as Smokey loves to be photographed with children and adults of all ages. Make sure to also sign his birthday card that is still on display inside the visitor center.
Chilao Visitor’s Center is located int he heart of the Angeles National Forest, 26 miles north of the 210 freeway in La Canada. Take Highway 2 (Angeles Crest Highway) north. The Center is clearly marked and located in mile 50. White mile marker signs will guide you along the highway.
