Highway 2 celebrated in art

The Modest Fly Studio and Gallery will host a multi-media art show September 27 through October 18

27 artists and over 100 pieces of artwork, ranging from intricate wood sculpture to expansive painted landscapes, in traditional and contemporary styles, will fill the Modest Art Studio and Gallery from end to end.

Highway 2 - the journey and the destination, is a show inspired by its location, its many moods and many users. The art is based on a location and a stretch of asphalt; the Angeles National Forest and the Angeles Crest Highway.

The show is being hosted by the La-Canada based non profit association Redbird as a means of reaching out to a broad and diverse audience. Redbird is a Native American and environmental group which operates an outdoor education venue in the Angeles National Forest, Chilao School, as well as other cultural and environmental programs. The show seeks to include the many ways people appreciate both the highway itself and the places it leads to.Just as multi-cultural tolerance is a building block of Redbird’s work, so respect and understanding of the forest and its many users is a goal at the heart of this show, which includes Native American basketry and gourd work, and even storytelling, as a means of exploring the many ways people interact with the land.

Stretching from the ocean to the desert, Highway 2 spans the breadth of the California experience. Where it crosses the San Gabriel Mountains it is known as the Angeles Crest Highway, and it is in this portion of road that there is an undeniable magic, an allure, a mingling of scenic wonder and technical road, beauty and danger, tranquility and excitement. Wound about all of this, integral to the expression of the experience, there is art. Art that comes from the bounty of the forest, art that is an expression of the sounds and sites of that land, art that captures bits and pieces of the scenery, art that is inspired by the trees, the sky, the song of birds, the roar of finely tuned engines, the winding highway itself. Hosted by Redbird and the Modest Fly Art Studio and Gallery, Highway 2 - the journey and the destination brings together art and experience, asphalt ribbon and endless sky. Meet the artists in our Facebook group - Highway 2 - the journey and the destination, and join us for the opening reception on September 27 from 6 PM to 9 PM.
