Horse Thief Mile is a course designed to emulate the conditions of canyon riding. All rider experience levels and all motorcycles are welcome. First time track riders are also welcome.
Riders need appropriate gear - one or two piece riding suits, either textile or leather, motorcycle boots, gloves and an up-to-date full face helmet. Modular helmets are acceptable.
Motorcycles need new to good tires less than four years old. They do not need to be "track tires" or "racing tires." Whatever you normally ride with is fine. The age is important because over time, rubber hardens and loses its ability to grip the road surface.
Riders are divided into A, B and C groups, with A being the most experienced. C group riders - those with a little less time in the seat - have the opportunity to get mentoring and instruction at no additional cost.
Riders go out on the track in groups for twenty minute sessions from 9 AM to 5 PM. In between, there's time to eat, hydrate, relax and meet other riders. Refreshments are served by the track day committee, and Willow Springs operates The Paddock for those looking to break for lunch.
The track day is $150.00 per rider. Riders may bring more than one motorcycle. There is overnight dry camping (tent/trailer) at Willow Springs at no cost for the evening before events. There are also motels in the vicinity of Rosamond and Lancaster.
A rider's meeting takes place at 8:30 AM; all riders must attend the meeting. Important information about how to enter and exit the track and etiquette while on the track is gone over at the meeting. Each group of riders is taken out by a lead bike for their first lao and a half around the track, so riders can familiarize themselves wit it at a slow pace.
The track day is hosted by Redbird, a 501(c)(3) non profit association which operates Chilao School, a venue off of Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2) in the Angeles National Forest.
Registration is open now for all groups. Please visit the link to learn more and register.
