Video: Huff Presents Teacher Reform Proposal

Senator Huff recently proposed reforms making it easier for districts to fire teachers for criminal or unprofessional behavior - a topic that resonates loudly in La Cañada after the Gabrielle Leko case.

This is Senator Bob Huff’s (R-Diamond Bar) presentation of SB 1059, his teacher reform proposal requested by Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa and the LAUSD Board of Trustees in response to the Miramonte School scandal.

The California Teachers Association showed up to vigorously oppose the bill, and it received only two votes. Six votes were needed to move it out of committee.

The topic of tenure and the need for education reform resounds with La Cañadans, following the case of , a teacher who used ethnic slurs when speaking to some students and, after an exhaustive investigation, settled with for . She will leave in June, and the district will not incur further legal fees.

Board president Scott Tracy and member Andrew Blumenfeld have as it is currently written. Blumenfeld has called on people to write to La Cañada's State Senator, Carol Liu, who is up for re-election.
