LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Laguna Beach is one of the most beautiful places on the planet, but as residents know, the price of that beauty comes with an eye for emergency preparedness.

Fires, mudslides, power outages and yes, even the pandemic are never far from our thoughts. After the year and a half we've gone through, many residents are attuned to how to bolster your family's emergency plan. If you've yet to make one, here are five tips to get you going thanks to the City of Laguna Beach.

1. Make a plan. Know who to contact, memorize phone numbers in case your cell runs out of power. Have a meeting point location that everyone in your house and extended family knows about, and get prepared! Use this template provided by the City of Laguna Beach.

2. Get involved. Join a Community Emergency Response Team class. Register for the community emergency class, learn some disaster medical and fire suppression techniques, and more.

3. Build an emergency survival and medical kit. Whether you purchase an Emergency Kit from the city or build your own, on hand to keep everyone in your family safe, warm, dry and hydrated until help arrives. Make a 72-hour pack with enough supplies for people and pets in your home. (Note: these are still available for sale from the city website).

4. Prep your landscape to avoid fire danger. The Laguna Beach Fire Chief teaches about how to keep your landscaping fireproof.

5. Know your evacuation route out of townthere are 22 of them. What is your evacuation route name and number? Learn the terminology and the way out. We recommend you download, print and become familiar with the best way out of town.
