Balloons Banned In Laguna Beach Starting 2024: What To Know

The city moved forward with a ban on balloons being used on public property or at Laguna Beach city events starting 2024.

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Laguna Beach City Council members moved to ban the use of balloons on city property and at city-held events in an attempt to eliminate a major source of trash floating near the community's shoreline on Tuesday, the city said.

Laguna Beach City Council members voted Tuesday to ban balloons in public, whether inflated with helium or not. Starting 2024, the balloons cannot be used on public property or at city events.

The new rule comes as several California beach cities have limited balloons and the state enaced a law to regulate the types of balloons made of foil.

Chad Nelson, chief executive of the nonprofit environmental organization Surfrider Foundation, said during Tuesday's meeting that the balloon ban was "just the beginning."

"We're chipping away at all these things we find and trying to clean up the ocean one item at a time," Nelson said during the meeting.
