Celebrate Black History Month In Laguna Beach With These Events

A Laguna Beach nonprofit will be hosting three events in honor of Black History Month. Here's what to know.

LAGUNA BEACH, CA β€” In honor of Black History Month, Laguna Beach nonprofit "We All Matter" will be hosting three events at St. Mary's Episcopal Church throughout the month of February.

"All are invited to participate in the upcoming African American/Black History Events. We welcome all because 'We All Matter,' and the program is organized with the dream of 'Building Bridges and Not Walls,' in mind," organizers said in a statement.

  • Friday, Feb. 3, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. β€” St Mary’s Episcopal Church, 428 Park Ave.

This free event will feature Father Michael Lapsley as a virtual keynote speaker. Lapsley will tell his personal story detailing his experiences fighting against Apartheid. Father Lester Mackenzie, Rector of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, will also speak at the event. Light refreshments will be supplied.

  • Friday, Feb. 10, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. β€” St Mary’s Episcopal Church, 428 Park Ave.
This free event will feature Dr. Rebecca Washington-Lindsey, who will speak to a theme of "resistance." Residents who attend will watch two different film clips, identify how resistance is played out in the media, compare two movie clips and determine useful resistance strategies when working through oppression.

  • Friday, Feb. 24, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. β€” St Mary’s Episcopal Church, 428 Park Ave.

The final event will serve as a celebration for the 97th anniversary of Black History Month. Vibrant, multi-ethnic art will be on display for residents to enjoy, as well as a live performance from Laguna Beach resident Reggie. Donations will be taken at the door, organizers said.
