Laguna Beach Firefighters Aid Hiker Rescue At Crystal Cove Park

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Emergency responders worked in unison Wednesday to rescue a hiker in distress at Crystal Cove State Park.

Newport Beach Fire responded to the scene where a hiker suffered an as-of-yet unidentified medical condition and required emergency assistance and airlift transport from the remote hiking trail, spokeswoman Natalie May reported over social media. Laguna Beach Firefighters also responded to the scene of the rescue, lending mutual aid support.

Newport Beach Station 8 firefighters drove their engine to the scene, though the victim was not on the easily accessible trail. The department's off-road vehicle better enabled rescue crews to safely and quickly reach the hiker in the backcountry, May said.

Fire Crew 68 offered Advanced Life Support Intervention the ground, working with Orange County Fire Authority's Helicopter 2 medics who airlifted the patient from the scene, according to May. The patient was flown to a nearby hospital in unknown condition.

May called the joint rescue between Newport Beach Fire, Laguna Beach Fire and Orange County Fire Authority a great example of teamwork between all stations.
